Labyrinths have always marked certain locations and have always been used as initiation trails.
The Chartres labyrinth was built after the Pythagoreans.
The 11 concentric circles and the 34 hairpin curves lead to the center of the leaf rose. Symbolically, people should look for their way through the labyrinth to their own center – in order to “find God in themselves and walk the mystical path”.
Winding curves symbolize our path in life, in order to go further, we have to turn inward again.
With this counterpart we take consciously that the self-path is never straight, the beginning of the path is closer to the center, then more far to arrive where a “messenger of God” is not needed because we have arrived.
